School Age Athletes and Chiropractic Care
Chiropractor

A growing population of clients seeking the benefits of chiropractic is school-age athletes.  More and more kids are getting involved in sports at younger ages.  The pressure to choose your “main sport of focus”, get additional training, and specialize in year-round activities has never been greater.  Kids are more specialized, more injured, less adaptable, and more burned out because of the cycle of never-ending activities, little rest, recovery, and self-care.

Athletes Need Proper Recovery

There is also an accepted notion that kids are just “young” and “resilient” and will simply “get over” their accidents, injuries, and pain because “they aren’t as old as us!”  But the truth is all humans can benefit from property recovery and restoration.  We don’t have time in this blog to get into all my opinions on training young athletes, the diversification or lack thereof in their routines, and simply the notion of play as opposed to performance in youth sports.  The fact is any athlete looking to perform, recover, and be their best can personally benefit from chiropractic.  Chiropractic is about the FUNCTION of the body and nervous system and aids in the resilience and recovery of an individual.

“I would estimate that at least 90% of world-class athletes use Chiropractic

on a regular basis to prevent injuries and to improve their performance.”

SEAN ATKINS, Ph.D. Exercise Physiologist

The Science of Chiropractic

The science of chiropractic is founded on the principle that proper nerve supply is foundational in the performance of a properly functioning body.  The central nervous system controls every cell tissue and organ in the human body and is housed in the spinal column.  When the spine is in its optimal structural position, the nerves are protected and optimal communication exists between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. The vertebra of the spine is susceptible to certain stresses and forces, which can cause them to lose their proper structural position.  These minor misalignments of the spine referred to as “ subluxations” cause nerve interference and weaken the entire structure of the spine.

Affects of Athletic Training on the Spine

Athletic training and competition can often jar and misalign the spinal column because the spine is at the center of the body. Impact to the legs, feet, head, shoulders and torso often radiates to the spine.

Doctors of Chiropractic detect and correct vertebral subluxations by physically adjusting the spine. This restores the spine and nervous system to a more optimal level of function, which maximizes the body’s performance and healing potential.

Great Reasons for School Age Athletes to See a Chiropractor

  • Growing pains, and soreness from competition
  • Acute injury or trauma
  • High impact sports (football, wrestling, soccer).
  • Past or recent concussion Injury.
  • Chronic recurring injury.
  • Maintain current level of training
  • Take your performance to the next level!

I personally was a collegiate cross country, and track athlete and benefited from chiropractic care.  I continued to run competitively at the marathon and half marathon distance after college and rarely experienced setbacks or injuries.  In fact, between my first and second marathon, I dropped 7 minutes off my time while being under regular chiropractic care.

The main advantage of being under care is chiropractic makes you more resilient.  It’s not just about avoiding pain, discomfort, or injury.  Chiropractic is about performing your best in this life!  If you or the ones you know are looking to achieve your highest level of performance on the field or off, then get scheduled with us so we can help you become more resilient and achieve peak performance!
