Picture yourself lying on a beach, the sun beating down, sun glasses on, sounds of seagulls in the distance, a slight breeze, and of course the smell of fresh sea salt in the air!  It’s times like these where we tend to feel most relaxed. Is it the beach? Is it the sun? or maybe it’s the SALT!

So what is Salt Therapy? Salt therapy (or Halotherapy) is a spa-like environment while surrounded by dry salty air. The therapy room contains reclining chairs, soothing music, and rock lamps. While relaxing in the room a machine, called a halogenerator, grinds dry salt and pumps micro particles into the air.  Sessions last from 30-45 minutes and the goal of the therapy is to relax and breathe in the salty air. It’s just like being at the beach!

Besides the relaxation and the mini getaway, the salt has many health benefits.  The accumulation of salt in the air affects our cell activity. The salty air helps respiratory issues, skin conditions, and improves immune function to name a few.

When inhaled, the negatively charged ions of salt help to purify the air, and reduce inflammation and mucus of the lungs. The salt ions decrease the thickness of mucus in the lungs which allows for better drainage. Inflammation and mucus in the lungs is associated with conditions such as the flu, asthma, allergies, sinus conditions, COPD, bronchitis, and even the common cold!

Salt therapy also helps improve skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. The salt micro-particles contain magnesium, which helps with skin conditions by lowering cortisol levels, stabilizing hormone imbalance, and improving cell activity. The contact between our skin and the negatively charged saturated salty air stimulates the skin cells, increasing the production of collagen fibers that effect skin rejuvenation. The salt, as mentioned earlier, also reduces inflammation in the body, which is a main contributor to many skin conditions.

Salt, like chiropractic, can benefit our immune and nervous system. Air saturated with salt has a detoxifying effect that can improve our immune function by stimulating our lymphatic system. Our lymphatic system is also stimulated by the nervous system. Chiropractic removes interference from the nervous system and by having a optimally functioning nervous system, all the other systems of your body are able to function better. Both salt therapy and chiropractic work towards a healthier functioning body. Chiropractic helps to remove inference in the body from the inside out; the salty air removes inference from the outside in.

A trip to a salt room can help with our relaxation and our health! Just remember, salt does dry our bodies out so after a session make sure to drink plenty of water.  Curious about a session even new client appointment made through this week includes a complementary 45 minute salt session at the Salt Lounge in Wyomissing.
